CNIB Alberta/NWT Division
CNIB has a variety of services for children with vision loss and their families. Our programs and services are based on a family-centred model with the belief that the family has the greatest influence on a child’s development. We provide supportive counselling, service coordination, information, advocacy and programming for children from birth to age 18 and their families.
CNIB’s Early Intervention and Children’s services program includes:
- Early Intervention Program:
- An Occupational Therapist and Early Intervention Assistant work with families one on one to support the development of skills including play and self-care (0-4 years).
- Play groups / parents and kids in touch (0-5 years).
- Assessment, counselling, support and referral services for children from birth to age 18 and their families.
- Information nights for parents and professionals who work with children with vision loss
- Camps, Young STAR Program (Skills, Training and Recreation) and fun day activities and events during the year.
- Orientation and Mobility Training: one-on-one training with the child to develop safe, independent travel skills and white cane techniques.
- Independent Living Skills training: one-on-one training for table manners, eating techniques, cleaning and grooming, and communication skills including braille and handwriting.
- Family Resource Room and a Toy Lending Library loaning toys, puzzles, games, books and switch-adapted toys to children and youth of all ages.
- Information Resource Centre and Library services, including audio books, braille books, printbraille and tactile books, music scores, descriptive videos, contests and reading clubs.
- Ambassador’s Club for teenagers.
